These offers are everywhere.
But do they work?

study found that simply by shifting from a cash reward to a bottle
of wine (1/10th the cost of the cash reward) the number of referral
sales increased by 3,600%!
Oo. Looks like real gifts work much better. 😉
Maybe this is a reason why Uber positions its referral message as “Get a
free ride worth up to $5 when you refer a friend to try Uber” and not just “Get $5 …”.
