+38% more connections (LinkedIn study)

LinkedIn would be dead if people were not connected to each other somehow.
This is a key activation problem for LinkedIn.

One day they did something very simple that increased the number of connections by +38%…

1. Instead of forcing users to fill big profiles, they included this single question right after signing up:
“Where did you used to work?”

2. Based on this information, they then displayed a list of LinkedIn users from this former workplace.

3. This gave users a memory jog and motivation to take the step of reconnecting with old colleagues.

Result:
+ LinkedIn’s pageviews increased by 41%
+ Searches – by 33%
+ Users listed 38% more work positions
