In the beginning, Thrive Market was rejected by all VC firms.
The co-founders self-funded the business, operating from home.
3 years later they achieved…
$120 million in annual revenue (over 2M paying subscribers).
How did they get those subscribers…
Movement:
1. They headed the movement “for making healthy living affordable and accessible to everybody”.
2. They provide health food from stores at 25% to 50% off, direct to consumer, with free shipping.
3. In exchange, they charge a $60 annual membership fee.
4. For every paid membership, they give a membership away to a low-income family.
Content + Influencers:
1. They create “content” around their movement.
2. Influencers are happy to share this type of content, as it has zero appearance of promotion.
3. Example of their “content”:
They launched an official government petition to bring US food stamps online.
They leveraged influencers and ended up generating:
+ over 310,000 signatures,
+ hundreds of millions of media impressions,
+ and letters of support from senators and congressional representatives.
Result:
the USDA (government) announced a pilot program to bring food stamps online.
